When dealing with extreme political violence in the twentieth century, many studies overlook three relevant features in history: first, the wide-ranging role of the one who is attacked or wounded, beyond the dichotomy between the passiveness of the victim and the direct violent response; second, the relevance of the old and small technologies, beyond the new and large engineered systems; finally, the tension through which scientific experts and counter-experts participate in the conflict.
